The Kones are coming! The Kones are coming!

Today we're highlighting the new Vertex Alpha Kone series skimmers. I figured what better way to celebrate Halloween weekend than to talk about the freakishly good performance of the Alpha 170 Kone. If you were at Reef-A-Palooza we had one on display at our booth.

At the heart of this Vertex skimmers performance is a Red Dragon pump which produces an amazing 1000-1200 LPH of air at a mere 18 watts and runs very quiet. Red Dragon pumps are becoming very popular for their efficiency and silent operation. In fact, they are marketed for "lifestyle applications" like that noisy reef tank sitting in your living room keeping you from enjoying your television. All this, and it produces some serious foam to boot.

The performance features of the Alpha Kone don't stop there. Included is a bubble plate which decreaces turbulence inside the skimmer chamber. Decreasing turbulence helps the bubbles, already coated with protein, from reducing performance by falling back down in the chamber. In addition, the cone shaped chamber helps gently guide the bubbles towards the collection cup which increases efficiency.

Alpha series skimmers also show attention to detail in their design. The Red Dragon pump can be mounted on either side of the cone, depending on your application. The skimmer itself can be disassembled for easy cleaning and is attached by corrosion resistant titanium fasteners. High quality components are also used throughout.

This skimmer is in stock and ready to ship out now. Feel free to check out more details on our website here.

Deltec's Sleek New Designs

Thanks to Deltec and D-D, had several of the new Deltec protein skimmers on display at Reef-A-Palooza.
Since Deltec patented their pinwheel design several years ago, many advances have been made in protein skimmer technology. These brand new skimmers take those advancements and raise the bar even higher.
Most impressive on the new skimmer designs are the pumps. The Eheim pumps that came with the older model Deltecs were great performers for their time, but the new pumps produce an amazing 4x more liters of air per watt!
Several design updates have also made their way into the new Deltecs. Bubble chambers reduce turbulence, allowing for a more compact design while still increasing performance. On the SC models, the pump is placed underneath the skimmer. This increases performance by increasing pressure on the pump and ensuring only unskimmed water is passed through.
Deltec has long been known for their innovation and quality design. These new models look like they will live up to Deltec's reputation. Their high end attention to detail and price tag may not be for every hobbyist, but they certainly deliver high-end performance to match.

Super Lumens!

For those of you not in sunny southern California (and to those who missed it), there were a lot of great new and soon-to-be-released products on display at Reef-A-Palooza this past weekend. Over the next couple of days, I'd like to go over some of the equipment we are most looking forward to.

Today, I'd like to show off some tricked-out new ballasts that will be available on our website soon. Lumatek, which is a definite favorite of's Reef Squad, recently sent us prototypes of ballasts that we will be selling soon.

So what makes them so fancy, you ask?

Each ballast can run bulbs of different wattages. The smaller one will fire a 150-250W HQI bulb while the larger ballast goes between 250W-400W with ease. This is easily done on both ballasts by the turn of a knob. Better yet, the 400W ballast has a "Super Lumens" mode that will overdrive a 400 watter.

But wait, there's more!

Turn the knob down if you're looking to save on electricity or acclimate your brand new LE chalice that costs as much as your firstborn child. The MD Reef Squad has been testing several bulbs at different wattages with no noticeable color shift. Add to that all the other great features Lumatek E-ballasts bring to the table and you're looking at a great new product.

Check back for more details, including pricing. Until then!

Q&A with Keith, 10/16/09

How much sand should I use in a 55-gallon saltwater aquarium?

The amount of sand to use depends on how deep you want your sandbed. The following recommendations are based on a 48"x13" footprint.

  • For a 1" deep sandbed, you'll need approximately 35lbs of sand
  • For a 2" deep sandbed, you'll need approximately 65-70lbs of sand
  • For a 3" deep sandbed, you'll need approximately 95-100lbs of sand
  • For a 4" deep sandbed, you'll need approximately 130-135lbs of sand
If you have any additional questions or concerns, don't hesitate to contact us for assistance.

New Outdoor Aquarium at

OK, I lied.

There isn't an aquarium outside of our Garden Grove headquarters.

There is, however, quite a moat forming outside of our office due to the recent storms here in SoCal.

Our IT director shot this on his iPhone after braving the mighty street river. I doubt his Range Rover experienced any difficulty; I almost turned my Nissan Sentra around when I came upon the great flood.

A few employees stood outside and cheered as we motored through the urban abyss.

I think I'll take my lunch when it's low tide...

JBJ C-Scope ATC Aquarium Refractometer
Magnifies the scale over 2x compared to traditional refractometers for easy viewing. Since water temperature effects salt readings, all C-scope refractometers are equipped with automatic temperature compensation to give the correct read
ing even if your water temperature isn’t. The C-Scope will not only deliver the most accurate readings, it will do so consistently with the same test sample. The C-Scope was designed to provide a clear and sharp dual scale. This is accomplished with a deep color contrast between the blue and white to quickly destinguish your measurement.

Vertex RF-1 ATC Aquarium Refractometer
Maintaining a stable salinity is one of the most important aspects of reef tank husbandry. Gone are the days when the serious
hobbyist relied on Hydrometers to keep tabs on this crucial parameter. Now these vital measurements are easily monitored with the Vertex Refractometer. Each Vertex Refractometer features our Clear View oversized display to ensure the easiest, most accurate readings possible in two scales (±1.0% salinity and ±0.001 specific gravity). Vertex Refractometers also feature ATC to self-adjust all samples to the proper reading temperature, increasing the ease of use.

JBJ True Temp Heating System w/Controller & Titanium Heating Element
JBJ's digital microprocessor boasts amazing +/- 0.5 F a
ccuracy, a calibration setting, indestructible titanium heating element with thermal shut off, smart memory chip, LED heating indicator, magnetic heater/probe holders, safety guard, remote temperature probe and a large constant LED display of the current temperature. Choose from 150W, 300W, 500W, 800W and 1000W.

Sera 15 Gallons Biotope 60 Nano Cube Aquarium
Setting up this compact 15 gallon complete aquarium is a snap. Includes 4-chamber internal filter with 50-watt heater thermostat and feed pump. Handsome polished glass bow front
. Innovative aquarium cover features fold-and-push mechanism and 18W T5 Lamp. Tank measures 16"W x 18"H x 19"D. Perfect for freshwater applications!

Marine Depot AquaDoser
The AquaDoser is a great way to minimize daily aquarium maintenance like topping off water or adding supple
ments to your reef. It’s also convenient for vacationing since it tops off your tank water and/or supplements automatically while you are away. The AquaDoser is a gravity flow device. This means no pumps are needed to top off and/or dose your aquarium. Just make sure the bottom of the AquaDoser sits higher than your sump or aquarium water level. Remember: water weighs over 8 lbs/gallon. So when full the 5 gallon AquaDoser can weigh over 40 lbs! Be certain you place your AquaDoser in a location that can safely support this weight. Available in 1 gallon, 2.5 gallon and 5 gallon models. Replacement hose kit also available.

Reef-A-Palooza Update: We need your photos!

Reef-A-Palooza is just around the corner. October 24 and 25, to be exact.

We've been working very hard this year to create the best booth we've ever had. New products will be on display (some in operation), our Reef Squad experts will be fielding your questions, we'll be giving away free goodies and, perhaps best of all, we'll have computer kiosks on-site to fulfill orders.

One of the things we're trying this year is playing a slide show on a large display during the event. We're going to feature products, promos and customer aquariums.

And that, my friends, is where you come in.

We want to feature customer tanks (or "success stories," as we're calling them internally) and need your help getting photos for our slide show.

All you need to do is email us some high-quality pics of your aquarium along with your first and last name. As long as your shots look good, you'll make the cut ... and we'll make you famous.

Well, almost famous.

Thank you in advance for your participation. We look forward to seeing you at RAP!
